The venue

The Crucible is a working theatre on Tudor Square in Sheffield city centre. It has hosted the World Championship since 1977. During snooker, the steeply tiered auditorium wraps closely around the playing area; there is no separate balcony to choose.

Snooker capacity: 980. This is the published snooker figure reported by Sky Sports. The theatre’s current 964-seat production figure is different; neither guarantees how many tickets are offered for a particular session. Camera positions, hospitality and access allocations affect saleable seats.

The World Championship is the main event here, but the World Seniors Championship also returns in May. The 2027 championship runs 17 April–3 May; the seniors follow on 6–9 May.

Where to sit

Two tables run through the quarter-finals, with a partition between them; the printed plan’s left half faces Table One and its right half Table Two. One table replaces them for the semi-finals and final: see round dates, match lengths and the full table explanation.

[UNVERIFIED: exact seat-by-seat big-screen sightlines.] The official plans show the table layout, but do not guarantee a clear screen view for each seat. Ask about your seat if seeing the televised close-ups is essential.

Use the official two-table plan or one-table plan. Blue symbols mark wheelchair positions on both sides of the two-table plan. Book an agreed route and view through the access team.

Getting there

Train: Sheffield station is a 10–15 minute walk. Follow Howard Street uphill, cross Arundel Gate, take the ramp beside Millennium Gallery and continue along Surrey Street to Tudor Square. This is the venue’s published route, not a step-free access audit.

Parking: Limited. There is no dedicated Crucible visitor car park. Q-Park Charles Street has 530 spaces, including disabled bays, roughly 5 minutes away. The theatre offers a first-hour-free voucher from front of house, not combinable with pre-booking. The car park is cashless. Use its entrance address; Arundel Gate has a bus gate.

Bus and tram: Arundel Gate stops are around 50 metres away and High Street around 300 metres. Castle Square and Cathedral tram stops are about 400 metres away. Check Travel South Yorkshire for your service.

Taxi: the theatre names Veezu, 0114 239 3939, for wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Specify the vehicle and agree a collection point. Limited Blue Badge street parking is listed on Norfolk Street and Surrey Street.

Getting home: 7pm play has no fixed finish. Allow 3–4 hours as an estimate, with the possibility of a later end. A Leeds or Manchester hotel requires a real return service, not just a daytime journey time. Check National Rail for the date of your ticket.

Tickets

You buy a reserved seat for one named session, and a table in the two-table rounds. It is neither a whole-day pass nor a ticket for the whole match. A first-round match has two sessions; later matches have three or four. Buy each session you want separately. Readmission is at suitable breaks, under staff direction.

Official 2027 bookings are through WST and Sheffield Theatres’ snooker booking office. The theatre adds 10% to the prices below. The event guide covers release dates, full prices and packages.

E-tickets can be scanned on your phone. Check the table, seat and session on your booking; early finishes have specific refund terms.

On the day

  1. About an hour before play: doors. The 2026 visitor sheet said the venue opened about one hour before each session. Allow time for bag searches; queues may be held in Tudor Square.
  2. Session start. Usually 10am, 2.30pm or 7pm; the two-session days start at 1pm and 7pm. See the event timetable. Have your e-ticket ready and put phones on silent. The terms allow empty seats to be reallocated five minutes before play.
  3. After four frames: mid-session interval. This is normally the break for toilets or drinks. The clock depends on the frames; listen to the stewards for return instructions.
  4. Finish: allow 3–4 hours as a planning estimate. For a 10am start that means roughly 1–2pm; 1pm, 4–5pm; 2.30pm, 5.30–6.30pm; 7pm, 10–11pm. These are allowances, not official end times. Slow play can run later; a concluding session can finish much earlier.

Cash or card: venue bars accepted both in the 2026 guide. Clothes: the current 2027 terms request smart dress and prohibit sportswear/team shirts. The 2026 sheet also warned that ventilation can make the auditorium cool; bring a layer.

Bags: the 2026 limit was A3 or smaller, subject to searches. The cloakroom did not take luggage or suitcases. Food and drink: 2027 terms allow only food and drink bought inside. In 2026, drinks in venue cups could go into the auditorium and bars closed at the start of the final frame.

During play: stay seated and quiet during frames; wait for a break before entering or returning. Silence alarms as well as ringtones. Unauthorised recording or transmission is prohibited by the 2027 terms.

Sources: 2027 booking terms; official 2026 visitor sheet; WST match reports for the four-frame interval. Checked 5 October 2026. [UNVERIFIED: 2027 doors, bag limit, cloakroom and cash arrangements.] The last-season details above are a guide pending the new visitor sheet.

Families and groups

Minimum age and children’s tickets: the 2027 price sheet lists no separate child band. [UNVERIFIED: tournament minimum age and child-ticket eligibility.] The current event terms and visitor sheet do not resolve this. Ask the box office before buying; a theatre’s ordinary babes-in-arms rule is not a World Championship rule.

For an eligible child, the 23 April 10am second-round session avoids evening travel and costs £55 in M, N, P before fees. It can still mean several hours of quiet sitting. The 2026 Winter Garden Cue Zone offered a free way to try snooker outside the auditorium; look for the new programme.

Groups of 10 or more: email groupbookings@sheffieldtheatres.co.uk. This is the theatre’s published group-booking route. A World Championship group discount is not confirmed; ask for adjacent seats, table allocation and the total including fees.

Where to stay

Walk times below are approximate planning estimates to the Crucible, except the hotel’s own stated five-minute Leopold walk. They are not audited step-free routes. No room prices are quoted.

Station side: for arriving by rail

Kelham Island / West Street side

  • Hampton by Hilton Sheffield — West Bar, between the centre and Kelham Island; allow 12–15 minutes to the Crucible.
  • The Crow Inn — pub rooms on Scotland Street, near Kelham Island; allow about 15 minutes. Rooms have an external staircase and no wheelchair access.

Further out: Leeds or Manchester by train

Add the Sheffield station’s 10–15 minute walk. These are daytime rail alternatives; neither city is a guaranteed option after a late evening session. Check the return service for your date.

Before, between and after snooker

Before the morning session

Tamper at Sellers Wheel — 149 Arundel Street, about 7–10 minutes away. Coffee and breakfast from 8am Monday–Friday, 9am at weekends. For 10am play, weekday breakfast leaves more time.

Crucible Kitchen — inside the venue. It opened at 9am on 10am-session days in 2026, but was closed for hospitality during that year’s final five days. Check the new event catering notice.

Between sessions

The Head of Steam is opposite the Crucible in Tudor Square: pub food without another long walk. Food service currently ends at 9pm. Ego, beside the Winter Garden on Surrey Street, is about 2 minutes away for a Mediterranean meal.

The Winter Garden Cue Zone ran in 2026 with free coaching and mini-tables; Tudor Square also had a big screen and picnic seating. The 2027 programme has not yet been confirmed.

After the evening session

The Head of Steam currently closes at 11pm Sunday–Thursday and midnight Friday–Saturday, with food ending at 9pm. Leopold Square has bars roughly 6–8 minutes away. Recheck hours for your tournament date; late play can outlast opening.

A quieter pint

The Brown Bear, 109 Norfolk Street, is about 2 minutes away: a traditional two-room pub rather than a large sports bar. The Old Queen’s Head on Pond Hill is about 7 minutes towards the interchange. These are options for a smaller pub; tournament crowds can still make them busy.

Places, Tamper’s hours and Head of Steam’s hours checked 5 October 2026. Other walk times are estimates from addresses. The 2026 fan zone is last-season information, not a promised 2027 programme.

Help on the day

Emergency: call 999 for an immediate threat to life. Give Crucible Theatre, 55 Norfolk Street, Sheffield S1 1DA, and tell a steward so staff can meet the emergency service.

Inside: speak to a steward or the front-of-house team for first aid, a seating problem or access help. The box office is on the left as you enter from Tudor Square.

FAQs

Can I see both tables?

Your seat faces the booked table. A partition separates the early-round playing areas. The left half of the printed plan faces Table One; the right half faces Table Two.

When does it become one table?

From the semi-finals, on 29 April 2027. First round, second round and quarter-finals use two tables.

Does one ticket cover a match or a day?

Neither: it is a reserved seat for one session. A full match can require two, three or four separate session tickets.

What is the cheapest World Championship ticket?

The published 2027 minimum is £50 before fees in standard M, N, P. The theatre’s 10% fee makes it £55.

Which station is nearest?

Sheffield, a 10–15 minute walk via Howard Street and the ramp beside Millennium Gallery.

Can I store a suitcase at the Crucible?

The 2026 visitor sheet said no luggage or suitcase storage. The 2027 visitor sheet is still awaited; arrange storage elsewhere.

Is the World Championship the only snooker event here?

No. The World Seniors Championship is confirmed for 6–9 May 2027, after the main championship.

Can I book a wheelchair space online?

Yes, after the official booking office enables wheelchair booking on your account. Contact the access team first.
